Dental insurance for dental implants

Gemma asks,

Do you have names of any companies covering implants?
I have been told I may need some in the future.

Many thanks

Thanks for your question Gemma.

There are a few things to think about here. First of all dental implants are likely to cost several thousands of pounds. So, while a dental insurer may ‘cover dental implant costs’ as part of their policy contract, they may only cover up to a certain amount per treatment: for example £750.

The next problem is that if your dentist has told you that your son will definitely need the dental implant treatment, the insurance policy may not cover it based on the fact that it is a treatment that has already been lined up before you took out the insurance policy.

The third and final step is to find an insurer that covers implants. The problem with this is that it depends on the purpose of the implant. If, for example, a tooth is knocked out due to an accident, the insurance is likely to cover the procedure under the accident insurance cover. However, if the implant is needed to replace a tooth that was known, for example to be rotting, before the insurance policy was taken out, this may be something that the policy does not cover due to the fact the condition was diagnosed before the policy was taken out.

In your case it seems as though the implant may be needed for a general treatment, rather than an accident or emergency treatment. In which case you will need a policy that provides a large amount of cover for non-accident caused treatments and includes prosthetic tooth implanting as one of the covered procedures.

We haven’t included the cover of dental implants in the dental insurance comparison table, due to the complications mentioned above. The best thing you can do is scan down the 8th column (Non-emergency treatments) in the comparison table and look for an insurer that covers a large amount per treatment.

Most insurers will only cover standard treatments. You will need one that covers surgical treatments.

So Gemma, the comparison table is a good place to start. Sorry we couldn’t answer your question more precisely. We’ll get back to you with a list of insurers that specifically cover dental implant insurance a later date. For now you need to research companies that cover large sums per treatment, as dental implants can cost several thousands of pounds.
