Are there any dental insurers that cover orthodontic procedures?
Charlotte asks,
I am wondering if there is an insurance company that covers orthodontic procedures. I have not been able to find one, so any help would be much appreciated. Thanks
Answer
Hi Charlotte,
Thanks for your question.
Dental insurers don’t tend to cover orthodontic treatment as it is considered cosmetic and therefore ‘elective’ (not necessary for dental health). There are insurances that specifically cover certain orthodontic treatments, such as dental implant insurance but in general if the treatment is cosmetic, insurance won’t cover it. Insurance is generally something that covers risks such as dental emergencies, as opposed to commercial treatments like having braces fitted.

I don’t think every dentist does sedation dentistry. The dentist has to complete a course to certify him or her in sedation dentistry before they can legally administer the sedation medications. However, most dentists do use Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas) as that is not considered “conscience” sedation. When the gas is used the effects are immediately reversed by the administration of oxygen, so you can drive and return to your normal schedule. The oral sedation is much stronger and you will remember virtually nothing of the appointment. You must have a driver to receive oral sedation too. Good Luck!
