My sister is genuinely scared about going to the dentist. It's so bad she's considering asking her PCP for an anti-anxiety med to take before she goes. Up until now she's just avoided the dentist as much as possible and self-treated with a quick shot of scotch beforehand. What do you think? Should she try something else before hand instead?

I have always felt apprehensive before going to the dentist, a mixture of fear and nervousness. I don't take anything beforehand, I just suck it up. I guess it's just something you have to get used to, if you don't go to the dentist you'll never get over your fear.

I don't think taking medication will fix anything unless she is completely phobic about going. Tell her to take relaxation exercises the day before and before going to the dentist and if she is still scared, see if someone can go with her. Its not shameful for an adult to need someone to hold their hand every once in a while :)
