Sometime ago I was brushing in a hurry and I hit my gum with the toothbrush, now it's sore. It has happened on more than one occasions. Is there any way to strenghten the gum that will not require me using my dental insurance?

First off, don't rub the sore area because that could make it worse. I did a search for you and came across remedies that are supported by dentists. The first is a saltwater rinse, and you could also hold a wet teabag against the area.

I have never heard of using a wet teabag against the area, do you know what that does to help? I might look that up. I have heard that a saltwater rinse can be helpful, but of course that can only go so far.

This was an interesting article about green tea:
    http://www.jmw.net/tea/green-tea.html

Almost all the way down the page it said:
"A German study found that an extract of green tea and hot water (filtered), applied externally to the skin for 10 minutes, three times a day could help people with skin damaged from radiation therapy (after 16-22 days)."

Googling it I found quite a few articles about different health benefits and natural treatments from tea/tea bags.

My grandmother swears by salt-water rinse. Be more gentle with yourself. :)

Mickey...I do try but sometimes I feel so strong ;-).

Digit - This is the first time I have ever heard about the teabag. I know green tea has lots of positive attributes but I didn't know that this was one of them.

Really, being more gentle is the only thing you can do! I have done this many times, normally when I am distracted. You cannot toughen up the gums to prevent the injury when you strike them as you seem to be asking, all you can do is try to prevent it happening in future.

Ouch! Brushing too hard hurts, and I do it all the time. The salt water rinse definitely works - for a variety of dental ailments really. If that doesn't work, I'd try out the tea bags. I've never done it, but a lot of people swear by tea bags.

You are right Faceoff. I am glad I posted this though, because if I didn't I would never had known that teabags could be used for this purpose. I hope the only need I will have for it is to pass it on to someone.
