How do you feel about an adult wearing braces? My sister is thinking about getting braces, and she is 32 years old. Do you think that it's odd to see somebody of this age wearing braces, or do you think she should stick with Invisalign. She said that Invisalign is more expensive, so she'd rather go with the traditional style of braces. What do you think?

If it suits her, which it does. I think it's quite fine. I know quite a few adults who were not able to afford braces until they were adults and they really don't look that odd to me.

That's the deal with my sister too, there really just wasn't the money when we were kids for both of us to have braces, and now she has the money to get them for herself (and the insurance of course).

Honestly, when I see an adult with braces I kind of think it's a bit odd, but I won't judge them. I understand that there are financial (and other) problems related to braces that make it so that people have to wait until they are adults. I think it's perfectly fine, and if other people have that much of an issue with it, they are immature.

I can understand you saying that seeing a adult with braces is kind of odd, Delta. It's just because you don't see it very often. I also agree that if somebody really has an issue, they are immature. In the long run, it works to better your confidence and self-esteem, in addition to your health.

Braces are not just for nice looking smiles. Your teeth and jaw are growing and forming when you're young, and mallocclusions (bad bite) are being adjusted by braces. My overbite is so bad the solution for my TMJ pain is now surgery.

Perhaps braces on adults are the first step to avoid surgery? Not sure, just read a little bit about it.

I really don't have a problem with braces on an adult. Many things can prevent a person getting treatment at a more appropriate time such a finances, or simply the criteria being different when they were children.

If they can afford it now then why shouldn't they have the chance?

Tooth Fairy, I was not aware that the jaw had so much to do with braces. I hope that by her getting braces, she can avoid having to have a surgery in a few years.

I've heard of this before. If I remember correctly while the braces straighten the teeth the direction of the tooth growth is effecting the structure of the jaw. I like this article for kids: http://www.kidshealth.org/kid/health_problems/teeth/braces.html
