Gum Disease
The main cause of gum disease is plaque. Plaque is a sticky colurless film of bacteria that forms on the outside of your teeth. If plaque builds up on your teeth and gum line it can cause your gums to become infected and swollen.
Amazingly about three out of four over 35 year olds have gum disease or have had it in the past. Anyone can get gum disease but adults are most likely to become infected. Certain medical conditions can increase the likelyhood of gum disease, which is why you should let your dentist know of any medical condition you have.
